Chemical Reporting Made Easy for a New York Utility Company

Con Edison, a major New York utility serving 10 million residents with 14,000 employees and 340 facilities, struggled with complex, overlapping chemical reporting requirements from federal, state, and local agencies—especially intricate NYC DEP rules—which made manual tracking and submissions time‑consuming and error‑prone. To address this, Con Edison has relied on HSI’s chemical management platform (including HSI SDS management, On‑Site Inventory and related safety/compliance tools) to centralize chemical oversight and regulatory compliance.

HSI implemented automated NYC DEP uploads, an integrated SDS/inventory system, and location‑specific workflows and approvals so Con Edison can submit one data dump instead of dozens of manual reports, maintain per‑user audit histories, and control chemical use by role and site. The HSI solution improved reporting accuracy and efficiency, consolidated monthly reporting work that had involved about 60 people at roughly 300 facilities down to a single person, provided CRS access to 300+ staff for inventory and reporting, and freed employees to focus on higher‑value tasks.
