A HPE Simplivity Case Study
Syntrophos is a Shared Service Center created by four Dutch cities that provides ICT, GEO-information and consulting services to over 120,000 citizens and seven agencies. With 1,400 staff and an 11-person IT team, the company needed to consolidate four city data centers, migrate dozens of physical servers and support Tier‑1 apps (Oracle 11g, SQL Server, IIS, etc.) before early 2015. Its legacy infrastructure limited scalability and recovery: best-case RPO/RTO were 12 and 4 hours, and worst‑case RTO stretched to three days, creating operational and financial risk.
Syntrophos deployed SimpliVity OmniCube hyperconverged infrastructure (initially eight OmniCubes, managed through VMware vCenter), replacing multiple consoles and third‑party backup tools. The solution delivered a 63:1 data efficiency ratio (≈360 TB saved), halved the data center footprint, and cut CAPEX/OPEX materially. Backups now take minutes, worst‑case RTO improved from three days to four hours, administration headcount dropped (from five to two for virtual infrastructure), and 128 of 170 VMs have been migrated without costly downtime, enabling stronger SLAs and simpler disaster recovery.
