A HPE Nimble Storage Case Study
The Victoria Department of Parliamentary Services (VDPS) supports the State’s 128 Members of Parliament and about 1,200 staff with services ranging from IT and broadcasting to facilities and security. When the Parliament’s storage area network reached end of life, replacing maintenance and hardware looked prohibitively expensive and skills‑intensive, so VDPS evaluated alternatives to deliver better performance, manageability and cost efficiency.
VDPS chose Nimble Storage after benchmarking showed it performed roughly three times faster than competitors, and deployed two CS460G‑X2 arrays via Onel Consulting (installed in three days; migration completed in three weeks). The new SAN now maintains all parliamentary storage and disaster recovery, supports Cisco Unified Communications, delivers sub‑1ms latencies, and uses InfoSight for predictive analytics. By leveraging thin provisioning and inline compression VDPS achieved a 72% space saving, reduced rack space and power use, and bought far less capacity up front (80TB vs a planned 150TB), currently using only 30TB.
