Korea Smart Card Achieves High Performance VDI with Nimble Storage

Korea Smart Card Co. (KSCC), which runs Seoul’s T-money fare system, needed to refresh an aging office IT environment in 2013 and virtualize 500 desktops to cut costs while preserving usability, manageability and security. Storage performance and capacity were the biggest concerns—previous VDI projects in the industry had under-delivered or driven up costs.

Working with resellers NetClips and Timegate, KSCC deployed a simple VDI design using two Nimble CS220G/CS240G arrays, cutting initial storage acquisition to about one‑third and eliminating costly FC HBAs/switches; Nimble snapshots also removed the need for a separate backup system. The Citrix XenDesktop rollout finished on time and on budget, delivered faster performance than the prior physical desktops, reduced rack space by ~80%, and provided a scalable, easy‑to‑manage 24x7 environment.
