A HPE Nimble Storage Case Study
Klohn Crippen Berger (KCB) is an international engineering and environmental firm with offices across Canada, Australia, Peru and the UK. Faced with rapidly growing data volumes (Vancouver and Calgary each had 10+ TB), long weekly tape backups that exceeded 40 hours, and limited local IT resources, the 2010 Brisbane floods underscored the company’s exposure and the need for faster, more reliable disaster recovery.
KCB deployed Nimble Storage arrays and standardized the platform across seven offices, using space‑efficient snapshots and cross‑office replication for local protection and DR. The change eliminated daily tape restores, retained 90 days of instant snapshots (with hourly SQL snapshots), cut RPO from 24 hours to 1 hour, and reduced recovery time from about a week to under an hour, while simplifying storage management and leaving tape for quarterly long‑term retention.
