Clackamas County Deploys Converged Storage to Serve its 400,000 Residents

Clackamas County, which serves more than 400,000 residents in the Portland–Beaverton area, faced rapidly growing data and service demands while operating under declining budgets. Its existing EqualLogic SAN couldn’t cost-effectively add a high-performance tier, creating emerging performance bottlenecks for databases, virtual servers and user access, and replication/DR consumed too much disk capacity so recovery point objectives (RPOs) couldn’t be met.

The county deployed two Nimble CS240 flash‑optimized arrays, combining SSD caching and cost‑effective SATA tiering in a single enclosure. The move delivered dramatic performance gains for user and VMware volumes, allowed affordable capacity expansion with no user impact, made snapshots and replication efficient enough to meet RPOs, improved VM stability, simplified management, and set the stage to migrate tier‑1/tier‑2 data and document images onto the Nimble platform.
