WakeMed Puts Patients First with Aruba Mobility Solution

WakeMed Health & Hospitals, an 870‑bed not‑for‑profit system in Raleigh, needed a scalable, secure wireless solution to support demanding voice and data applications—most critically an upgraded nurse‑call/Vo‑Fi system and point‑of‑care devices—after its previous wireless deployment reached capacity. The hospital required simplified administration, HIPAA compliance, and reliable QoS to ensure clinical voice and data traffic performed under heavy load.

WakeMed deployed Aruba’s user‑centric network with 600 Aruba AP‑70 access points and multiple Aruba mobility controllers to cover more than 2 million sq. ft. across eight sites, supporting ~600 Vo‑Fi handsets and ~150 wireless laptops. The solution centralized management, strengthened security, and guaranteed QoS, improving nurse response times, clinician mobility, and guest Internet access while enabling future initiatives like barcoding and electronic patient records.
