U.S. Department of Defense Military Health System prescribes Aruba for wireless connectivity

The U.S. Department of Defense Military Health System (MHS) provides care for about 9.5 million beneficiaries across hospitals, clinics and dental facilities worldwide and needed a secure, reliable wireless network to support initiatives like electronic medical records (AHLTA), asset tracking and mobile patient-monitoring systems. MHS faced strict DoD security requirements, aging buildings with challenging RF environments, and the cost and complexity of multiple proprietary networks for different medical systems—so it needed a single, interoperable architecture that enabled mobility and met federal security standards.

MHS selected Aruba Networks’ solution—FIPS-compliant Mobility Controllers with Policy Enforcement Firewall, Wireless Intrusion Protection and Adaptive Radio Management (ARM), plus AP-65/70 access points—to provide centralized security, automatic RF optimization and support for real-time voice and video. Deployed in 47 hospitals and 10 clinics (over 80% of MHS secure WLANs), the Aruba rollout reduced hardware and management costs, eliminated site surveys, improved performance and security, and accelerated adoption of EMR, asset tracking and other mission-critical mobile applications.
