A HPE Aruba Networking Case Study
Universiti Malaya, a research university of more than 30,000 students and staff, faced an urgent network challenge: aging edge switches and rising demand for campus‑wide mobility. Replacing and expanding the wired Ethernet infrastructure would have required hundreds of new switches, thousands of cables and nearly $2 million in capital—yet students preferred wireless access, and planned voice‑over‑Wi‑Fi and CCTV projects demanded a secure, centrally managed single‑SSID WLAN.
The university deployed Aruba controllers, AP‑125/AP‑70 access points, AirWave management and a Policy Enforcement Firewall with centralized data‑center control to deliver a scalable, secure single‑SSID network with role‑based policies, guest access and rogue detection. The rightsizing move eliminated some 80% of classroom/staff ports, cut wiring‑closet refresh costs by over 70%, reduced IT overhead, increased uptime and security—and saved about US$1.42 million in the first year.
