Preview of the U.S. Army Materiel Command Case Study

The U.S. Army Materiel Command Puts it All Together with Aruba Wireless Networks

The U.S. Army Materiel Command (AMC) manages materiel readiness for the Army across 149 locations worldwide and a workforce of more than 66,000. Many bases had aging infrastructure and large, remote sites—mechanic shops, hangars and “igloos” often lacked network access—forcing personnel to travel to enter inventory and maintenance data. AMC needed a secure, FIPS‑validated wireless LAN that could support handheld devices and the Logistics Modernization Program (LMP) while meeting strict DoD security requirements.

AMC chose Aruba as the exclusive WLAN provider for its FIPS 140‑2 compliance and comprehensive portfolio (Mobility Controllers, 802.11n APs, secure mesh, ARM and integrated intrusion protection), with By Light delivering turnkey installation. The deployment virtualized WLAN services, extended secure connectivity to remote locations, enabled on‑the‑spot inventory and online manuals, reduced travel, time and data errors, and modernized depot operations—reaching nearly half of U.S. AMC installations by the end of 2010 on schedule and under budget.
