Taylor’s University uses AI to change the way mental illness is diagnosed

Taylor’s University created the Centre for Human Excellence and Development (CHED) to tackle rising mental‑health problems and stigma in Malaysia—particularly among young people—and to overcome limitations of traditional, non‑technological research that missed micro facial expressions and lacked locally relevant data. The challenge was to capture and interpret tiny, culturally specific emotional cues so clinicians and researchers could improve early diagnosis and treatment.

CHED partnered with Glueck Technologies and deployed an AI‑enabled socio‑behavioral lab—13 face‑tracking cameras, VR, brain scanners, emotion‑recognition software—backed by HPE ProLiant servers with NVIDIA T4 GPUs and HPE StoreEasy for fast processing and storage. The setup enables real‑time micro‑expression analysis and culturally contextualized datasets, improving diagnosis and treatment research (including work on special‑needs care and lie detection), reducing stigma, and opening new collaboration opportunities with industry and other institutions.
