Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust Prescribes Aruba Networks for Mobility

Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust (SUHT) is a major UK healthcare provider serving hundreds of thousands of local patients and millions regionally. To speed diagnosis, reduce transcription errors and enable “data entry at the point of diagnosis,” SUHT needed a secure, scalable wireless LAN that would support EPR/PACS and future services without changing its existing wired infrastructure; an initial deployment of “thick” APs and an OEM alternative failed to meet management and Layer 3 requirements.

SUHT deployed Aruba’s mobility solution—two MMC-6000 controllers and roughly 500 AP-61 thin access points with ArubaOS security and wireless intrusion protection—providing centralized management, out-of-the-box security and easy deployment. The network now supports PACS, COWs, bedside EPR entry and Vocera voice-over-Wi‑Fi, reduced transcription risk, sped treatment, and is managed by a small IT team, with plans to add location services like RFID.
