Microsoft Corporate Headquarters Runs Lync Over Aruba Wi-Fi

Microsoft deployed Microsoft Lync voice and video over Wi‑Fi at its Redmond headquarters to support the Lync development team and executive staff in Buildings 30 and 31. The rollout had to meet very high expectations for reliability, security and real‑time QoS across a dense, heterogeneous client environment (400–600 users, roughly three devices per user, mix of IPv4/IPv6 devices and multiple OSs).

Microsoft used an Aruba solution—167 Aruba AP‑135 access points managed by an Aruba 6000 M3 controller with Policy Enforcement Firewall and Adaptive Radio Management—plus application‑aware DPI that applies QoS using a single SSID (DSCP/WMM tagging). The deployment delivered seamless mobility and toll‑quality voice as the primary network for 600 users, averaging 16,000 call records over 30 days with >96% toll quality (a 50% improvement over the legacy network).
