Los Angeles USD Gets a Clearpass for Securing District-Wide Wi-Fi

Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), serving 650,000 K–12 students, launched a one-to-one computing initiative that required campus-wide Wi‑Fi able to support millions of district-issued and BYOD devices across 750 schools and 84,000 multi‑vendor access points. The district’s challenge was to provide secure, differentiated access (for students, teachers and administrators), prioritize bandwidth during high-stakes testing, and gain centralized visibility and control over a large, mixed-vendor wireless environment.

LAUSD deployed Aruba ClearPass for vendor-agnostic access management and policy enforcement, plus Aruba AirWave for centralized network monitoring and performance optimization, with MDM and Active Directory integration and AirGroup support for classroom devices. The result is a secure, scalable enterprise Wi‑Fi that supports two million concurrent devices, accelerates troubleshooting, enforces granular access policies to protect learning resources and assessments, and enables cost-effective adoption of new classroom technologies.
