Local Government Wi-Fi Turns Challenges into Opportunities

Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council faced a major IT challenge when its town hall closed for refurbishment: the council had little prior Wi‑Fi, yet needed a quickly provisioned, government‑grade overlay network that would securely support staff, councillors and public BYOD, teleworking and GSX‑level security while future‑proofing coverage across temporary and refurbished buildings.

Working with Aruba Networks and local partner Mavoda, Trafford deployed Aruba wireless with Remote Access Points, rigorous site surveys and spectrum analysis, plus self‑provisioning for library users and plans for ClearPass and clustered controllers for resilience. The result was extensive, secure Wi‑Fi that exceeded expectations, enabled agile working and easy home access, reduced staff overhead for public access, and turned wireless into a business‑critical, scalable replacement for wired networking.
