A HPE Aruba Networking Case Study
Liberty University, a large private university serving over 52,000 students, needed to modernize a legacy wired and 802.11 b/g wireless network that couldn’t support growing mobile use, voice and broadcast-quality video, guest access for large events, or contemporary security and NAC requirements. The IT team wanted pervasive, high-capacity Wi‑Fi, stronger role‑based security and cost savings by reducing expensive wired infrastructure in dorms and other facilities.
LU deployed an Aruba 802.11n solution (≈800 AP-125 access points, Aruba 3000/6000 Mobility Controllers with M3 modules and AirWave management), integrated Policy Enforcement Firewall and NAC, and used multicast optimization plus HaiVision video compression to deliver IPTV over Wi‑Fi. The rollout delivered 15 live channels at ~3 Mbps each, supported up to 30 simultaneous viewers per AP before degradation, improved campus coverage and security, and reduced capital and operating costs by decommissioning much of the wired infrastructure.
