Italian shipping leader imagines diversification as ferry industry undergoes digital transformation

Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV), one of Italy’s leading ferry operators, set out to modernise its fleet to drive operational efficiency and reimagine the passenger experience. The company needed reliable wireless connectivity across 19 ships, secure network access for passengers, partners and operations, and the ability to collect actionable data — while also being able to rapidly repurpose vessels in emergencies (for example converting the GNV Splendid into a hospital ship in under ten days).

GNV deployed an Aruba Edge Services Platform with Wi‑Fi 6 access points, Aruba 7000 controllers, 2930 series switches and AirWave management to provide pervasive, secure connectivity across decks. The rollout creates a platform for future mobile apps and onboard services, enables secure multi‑user access and fast ten‑day fit-outs, supports integration with health and government systems, and delivers operational efficiencies and new revenue opportunities through digital services and data-driven insights.
