HiST - Customer Case Study

Sør-Trøndelag University College (HiST) in Trondheim, Norway — a multi‑campus institution with about 12,000 students across eight campuses and 80,000 m² of space — faced rapidly rising WiFi demand from multimedia teaching and Microsoft Lync, widespread BYOD with mixed device behaviors, inconsistent coverage, heavy RF interference in the city centre, and an imminent public IP address shortage. Their existing 802.11n system could not differentiate client types or deliver the capacity and reliability required for modern teaching and large auditoriums.

HiST migrated to Aruba 802.11ac APs and controllers with device profiling, ClearPass policy control, NAT for low‑priority devices, and cabling upgrades (CAT6/CAT7), planning ~1,000 APs including remote APs in staff homes and consolidating SSIDs. The deployment delivered campus‑wide coverage and higher capacity (auditoriums up to 350 concurrent users), better QoS and band steering to 5 GHz, reduced interference, simpler management, and a scalable, future‑proof network.
