Aruba Wi-Fi + Meridian serves 32 million passengers and improves operations at Rio de Janeiro’s airport

RIOgaleão‑Tom Jobim International Airport in Rio de Janeiro faced a major capacity and passenger‑experience challenge as it prepared for the 2016 Olympics and long‑term growth — nearly doubling capacity, adding almost 100 retail outlets, and handling an extra 1.5 million visitors on top of its 32 million annual passengers. The airport needed a high‑density, reliable multi‑tenant wired and wireless network, strong security, and a mobile wayfinding and engagement platform to streamline operations and improve the traveler experience.

RIOgaleão deployed an Aruba/HPE solution including 802.11ac APs, 7200 Mobility Controllers, thousands of Aruba Beacons, the Meridian mobile app platform, ClearPass, AirWave, HPE FlexFabric and FlexNetwork switches, and IMC. The rollout delivered pervasive Wi‑Fi across the terminal, supported critical systems from check‑in to baggage handling, enabled a Galeão app with turn‑by‑turn wayfinding and notifications, improved network management and security, and provided analytics to optimize passenger flow as the airport scales toward its 2019 capacity goals.
