Alamance Takes Wireless to the Next Level With Help From Aruba

Alamance Regional Medical Center is a not‑for‑profit healthcare system in Burlington, N.C., serving a growing regional population. Facing an aging 802.11 deployment, a small IT team needed a highly reliable, secure and easily managed wireless platform that could scale for more users and new services (including wireless VoIP, bedside applications, and reduced paper-based workflows).

Alamance deployed an Aruba/Alcatel‑Lucent solution with OmniAccess WLAN switches and 180 AP70 access points plus an Ascom VoIP pilot. The centralized, redundant architecture simplified management for the lean IT staff, strengthened security and gave staff mobility for bedside charting, monitoring and communications; it also enabled visitor Wi‑Fi and improved operational workflows—resulting in higher efficiency, successful VoIP rollout and progress toward paperless charting.
