Trade union OAJ drives for greater inclusion and membership engagement

The Trade Union of Education in Finland (OAJ), one of the country’s largest trade unions, was struggling to attract and engage new members, especially younger professionals who did not automatically see the value of union membership. OAJ needed a new approach to involve members more meaningfully in shaping its future strategy, and it turned to Howspace to help drive that change.

Using Howspace, OAJ invited members to co-create its strategy through regional member events and a broader digital participation process. The platform helped the union gather input from around 1,000 delegates in 22 events, engage an additional 10,000 members online, and involve about one-third of them in the Howspace-based work. OAJ said the process improved transparency, made members feel heard, and provided AI-supported summaries and interpretation of large volumes of discussion, while also leading to continued use of Howspace in other union activities.
