Hospital IQ helps MercyOne Des Moines Medical aggregate data to improve inpatient operations

MercyOne Des Moines, a large nonprofit healthcare provider in Iowa, was struggling with fragmented clinical and non-clinical systems that did not communicate well, making it difficult to access correlative data, improve observation patient management, and support staffing decisions. Working with vendor Hospital IQ and its operations management platform, which uses AI, prescriptive actions, workflow automation, and streamlined communication, MercyOne needed a better way to aggregate data and make real-time operational decisions.

Hospital IQ implemented a Google Cloud-based solution that unified data from multiple systems and produced real-time patient lists and operational insights to help MercyOne identify the right patient status, track tests and discharge readiness, and reduce manual work. The results were significant: MercyOne cut average observation length of stay by more than 14 hours within 45 days and reduced observation patients in the hospital from 30% to 19%, with improvements sustained after about 60 days.
