MercyOne, specifically MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, was managing daily staffing challenges in crisis mode due to staff shortages, a regional nursing shortage, and high turnover. Manual staffing processes were time-intensive, with the staffing office rounding on units multiple times a day and unit leaders spending much of their time on staffing issues, all without a consolidated view of available nursing resources. Hospital IQ’s Staffing solution was used to help address these problems.
Hospital IQ implemented proactive staff planning using a 7-day forecast, helping MercyOne better match staffing to patient demand, improve use of float staff and premium-pay shifts, and automate manual staffing tasks. The results included a 50% reduction in premium pay-based shift use, 80+ hours given back weekly to the staffing office, and 10+ hours given back weekly to each nursing leader, while staffing office rounding dropped to 15 minutes three times daily.
