ZirMed - Customer Case Study

ZirMed, a Louisville-based healthcare information management company, needed a more scalable and cost-effective analytics platform to support its growth and serve larger healthcare enterprises. Its earlier data warehouse-based systems were slow, expensive, and limited in the amount of data and queries they could handle, making it difficult to deliver fast, user-friendly analytics. Hortonworks and HDP for Windows were chosen to help ZirMed modernize its platform while staying within the team’s Windows-based skill set.

Hortonworks implemented a Hadoop cluster running HDP for Windows, first as a proof of concept and then in production with a 29-node cluster. The new platform delivered 5x usable storage, much greater processing power, and cut infrastructure costs to about 30% of traditional enterprise technologies. Query times dropped from 24–48 hours to 25 minutes in testing and then to 5 minutes in production, with data accessible through Hive for easier SQL-based analysis.
