United Network for Organ Sharing - Customer Case Study

United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), the non-profit that manages the U.S. organ transplant system, needed a more affordable and flexible big data platform to replace a limited SAS-based analytics environment and better handle large, diverse transplant data. Working with xScion, UNOS selected Hortonworks for its 100% open source approach and ability to avoid vendor lock-in.

Hortonworks helped UNOS build a self-service reporting and data warehousing solution using Hortonworks Connected Data Platform and Apache Hadoop with Tableau for visualization. The result was faster, richer organ offer reporting, cutting latency from several weeks to days, with a goal of reaching one day, while also giving doctors, hospitals, and transplant organizations a unified view of patient and organ data before, during, and after transplantation.
