UC Irvine Health turned to Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) and Hadoop to modernize clinical operations and support medical research. The health system needed a way to manage scattered spreadsheets and more than 9 million semi-structured records for 1.2 million patients across 22 years, making legacy data searchable and usable for both clinicians and researchers.

Hortonworks helped UC Irvine Health build a single Hadoop data lake that unified data for predictive readmission analytics, real-time patient vital monitoring, and cohort discovery. The results included retrieving records for more than 1 million patients, saving over $500,000 by shutting down a legacy view-only system, and enabling faster response to patient risk through real-time surveillance and data-driven care.
