The MITRE Corporation - Customer Case Study

The MITRE Corporation, through its CAASD center, needed a secure, governed way to ingest and analyze more than a petabyte of flight and aviation data for FAA safety and efficiency studies. Working with Hortonworks and Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP), MITRE also needed to reassure airlines that sensitive data could be protected while supporting large-scale analytics across multiple sources.

Hortonworks helped MITRE migrate its Hadoop environment to HDP, using centralized YARN resource management and Apache Ambari to simplify cluster operations and governance. The result was a single governed data lake that enabled derived data products, historical “flight stories,” and better safety and regulatory analysis; notably, FAA changes informed by this work have saved nearly $20M in fuel at one large airport and reduced passenger taxi and departure times by nearly one-and-a-half years annually.
