Metro - Customer Case Study

Metro Transit of St. Louis faced the challenge of maintaining a large bus fleet safely and reliably while reducing costs and adapting to changing emissions standards and a smaller workforce. To move from reactive repairs to proactive maintenance, Metro partnered with Hortonworks, using the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) as part of a Smart Bus initiative.

Hortonworks helped Metro consolidate machine data from bus subsystems and run predictive analytics to identify failure patterns before breakdowns occurred. The results were significant: mean time between bus failures improved from 4,000 to 21,000 miles, operating, maintenance and fuel costs fell by 50%, and operating costs dropped from 92 cents to 43 cents per mile, with further gains expected.
