Geisinger Health System, a large integrated healthcare provider serving more than three million residents, needed a better way to unify massive amounts of clinical, financial, and patient data while reducing the cost and complexity of its legacy enterprise data warehouse. To support this challenge, Geisinger worked with Hortonworks and used Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) to consolidate structured and unstructured data from EHRs, hospital systems, HIEs, surveys, and other sources.

Hortonworks helped Geisinger onboard more than 30TB of data into HDP, enabling faster analytics on patient records and doctor notes with tools like Apache Solr and Spark. The result was $2 million in EDW replacement savings and $500,000 in annual maintenance savings, while also improving access to data for clinicians and analysts and setting the stage for real-time streaming and predictive healthcare.
