Centrica - Customer Case Study

Centrica, a UK-based energy and services company serving around 28 million customer accounts, was looking to modernize its mission-critical IT and improve customer satisfaction, data accuracy, and operational efficiency. Working with Hortonworks and Hortonworks Data Platform, Centrica began with a small Hadoop proof of concept to replace costly legacy infrastructure and better handle growing volumes of telephony, billing, and smart meter data.

Hortonworks helped Centrica build a data lake that expanded from a 10-node POC to 250 nodes and up to 4 petabytes of usable storage. With Hortonworks Data Platform and Hortonworks DataFlow, Centrica gained deeper insight across millions of customer records, improved smart metering and billing accuracy, and enabled new tools like the Customer Information App; the company also decommissioned legacy warehouses and became a more data-driven business, reducing complaints and improving field service and customer experience.
