Using Remote Proctoring in Online STEM Environments

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) needed an online proctoring solution that could handle paper-based STEM exams, let instructors review sessions and student work, and offer flexible, platform-agnostic test-taking options. After piloting multiple vendors, Worcester Polytechnic Institute selected Honorlock for its remote proctoring platform because it met these requirements and provided robust training and support.

Honorlock deployed its proctoring service (AI monitoring with human intervention, live chat, and a dedicated client success manager), enabled students to scan and submit handwritten work, and provided faculty resources and recommended settings. The solution showed immediate improvement over WPI’s prior provider: summer 2019 use covered about 500 unique student users across multiple exams, and during the pandemic Honorlock supported a rapid scale-up to roughly 300 faculty teaching 700 courses—results WPI cites as certifying exam integrity, offering a modest learning curve, and giving students unlimited flexibility.
