Sappi Gratkorn Increases Process Visibility and Operator Efficiency with Experion®

Sappi Gratkorn, a major coated fine paper mill in Austria, needed to reduce off‑spec production and improve operator effectiveness while modernizing a legacy automation platform with minimal shutdown time. To meet these challenges Sappi engaged Honeywell to migrate and upgrade its aging DCS/QCS (over 12,000 I/O points) onto Honeywell’s Experion platform.

Honeywell implemented Experion MX/PKS with PMD controller upgrades, Uniformance PHD and Safety Manager, using Honeywell TPA‑PMD migration tools to move applications and displays 100% error‑free; the large legacy DCS application at Paper Machine 11 was migrated in just three days. The Honeywell solution increased process visibility and operator efficiency, delivered higher product quality at lower production cost, reduced hardware, spares and maintenance needs, and met scheduled targets on time and within planned production capacity.
