Robotics Provides 114-year-old Manufacturer 55 Percent Productivity Gain

JTM Products, Inc., a 114‑year‑old Solon, Ohio manufacturer of Murphy’s and Phoenix lubricants, faced constrained layout and heavy manual palletizing as it moved into a new 70,000 sq ft facility. To handle both 25–40 lb pails and case-packed quarts/gallons without adding permanent staff, JTM chose Honeywell Intelligrated’s integrated Alvey robotic palletizing cell — a Motoman articulated‑arm robot with an Alvey vacuum end‑effector — to automate palletizing for both product lines.

Honeywell’s Alvey solution freed floor space, improved ergonomics, and substantially increased throughput: the cell now handles more than 200,000 pails and 150,000 cases per year (about 75% of JTM’s annual volume), runs at roughly 65% capacity, and delivered a 55% productivity gain (≈2,800 pails/day vs. 1,800 hand‑stacked previously). The robot eliminated the need to hire two additional workers, reduced injury risk, and provided a payback horizon of about four years while leaving capacity for future growth.
