A Honeywell Case Study
KOGAS, South Korea’s state-owned LNG importer, needed to upgrade the aging safety system at its Tongyeong regasification plant to improve reliability, enable remote reset and continuous diagnostics, integrate a 485 serial link into an Ethernet network, and maintain a robust communication link between safety and process control — all with minimal downtime. Honeywell was engaged to migrate the existing Fail Safe Controller (FSC) architecture to its Safety Manager solution as part of the Train 1 Experion® PKS control system upgrade.
Honeywell delivered a phased FSC-to-Safety Manager migration (site survey, test system, application conversion and staged substation cutovers), fully integrating Safety Manager with Experion PKS R410, Experion Backup & Restore, Application Whitelist and Alarm Management Server. The project met the tight shutdown window, preserved KOGAS’s existing investments, improved safety and reliability, enabled remote and view-only monitoring, reduced maintenance and obsolescence risk, and maximized uptime on Train 1 — allowing KOGAS to proceed with the next controller upgrade.
