Case Study: China National Offshore Oil Corporation achieves improved operations, safety and reliability with Honeywell's Experion PKS Orion upgrade

Phased Approach Upgrading to Orion for Improved Operations

China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) operates the Xijiang 23-1 offshore platform and relied on Honeywell technology including the Experion® Process Knowledge System (PKS), Fail Safe Controller (FSC) ESD and fire & gas (F&G) systems. Over time the plant’s many additions caused deteriorating system performance: declining PLC reliability, poor information exchange between F&G, ESD and production control, and an inability to centralize maintenance across multiple vendor systems, prompting the need for an upgrade.

Honeywell implemented a phased upgrade to Experion® PKS Orion (R410), updating control servers and workstations (to Windows Server 2008/Windows 7) and integrating F&G data into the new console while retaining FSC and detectors to control costs. The Honeywell engineers completed the on-site work during turnaround and Honeywell continues to provide support; the upgrade delivered better operator effectiveness (advanced alarm management and automated alerts), stronger cyber security and diagnostics, more consistent procedural operations, and measurable improvements in safety, reliability and operational efficiency—outcomes CNOOC says “fully met our expectations.”
