Case Study: Marathon Petroleum achieves safer, modernized control networks with Honeywell migration solutions

A Honeywell Case Study

Preview of the Leading Industrial Organization Case Study

Marathon petroleum Andhoneywell Eliminate obsolete Equipment While upgrading To moderntechnology

Leading Industrial Organization partnered with Honeywell to address aging control infrastructure, rising support costs, and the risk of obsolescence in its plant automation systems. The customer needed a low-risk way to modernize legacy network and control equipment while maintaining uptime and improving cybersecurity and reliability.

Honeywell implemented a modernization approach centered on Experion® Local Control Network (ELCN), Enhanced High Performance Process Manager (EHPM), C300 controllers, and Fault Tolerant Ethernet (FTE) to replace coaxial cabling and obsolete hardware. The upgrade reduced NIM load from about 1,200–1,300 parameters per second to roughly 400–500, eliminated unnecessary cabinetry and LCNP board purchases, simplified maintenance, and positioned the customer for lower lifecycle and upgrade costs through virtualization and a more manageable Ethernet-based infrastructure.
