Integrated Fire Protection at Toromocho Minera Chinalco

Toromocho Minera Chinalco, Peru’s largest copper project, needed to meet strict local and international fire protection and zero-accident requirements while operating in remote, logistically complex and extreme weather conditions. Honeywell was selected to provide an integrated fire protection and life‑safety solution combining fire and gas detection, suppression, mass notification and centralized management.

Honeywell implemented a comprehensive, fully integrated system—including 24 XLS140/2 fire panels, network annunciators, digital voice commander and mass notification, linear heat detection, deluge/foam zones, inert gas integration and Experion Life Safety Manager—tied to a single control center and remote VPN operation. The Honeywell solution enabled the mine to begin operations on schedule (May 2014), ensured regulatory compliance, reinforced plant safety, provided automatic activation of nine water/foam deluge zones and early conveyor detection, and reduced operational risk and total cost of ownership.
