A Honeywell Case Study
Galp Energia’s Porto Refinery was struggling with alarm overload and a reactive operating posture: thousands of alarms had accumulated over years without overall rationalization, operators sometimes faced five alarms every 10 minutes (about five times the EEMUA standard), and the existing DCS could not retain alarms for long-term incident analysis. To address this, Galp Energia selected Honeywell and implemented Honeywell’s Alarm Management software as a dedicated alarm analysis and management tool.
Honeywell deployed a vendor-neutral Alarm Management system that integrated multiple DCSs, centralized change control, and supported a structured alarm rationalization process. Within four months the refinery moved from a stable/reactive to a robust performance level with 261 tags rationalized; nuisance and chattering alarms were reduced, incident analysis became automated and faster, maintenance response improved via daily instrumentation reports, and the program was expanded across all Porto Refinery plants — demonstrating measurable operational and safety benefits from the Honeywell solution.
