Honeywell Migration Solutions Help Saudi Electricity Company Revitalize Control System and Address Cyber Threats

Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), the Kingdom’s largest electricity provider, faced urgent reliability and cyber-security risks at its Qurayyah 4x625 MW plant due to an aging Honeywell DCS running R211 on Windows 2000 and obsolete network hardware. Unsupported software and missing security patches exposed the control system to vulnerabilities while rising controller and network loading, hardware obsolescence and the need for lifecycle upgrades with minimal capital investment threatened uptime and operational efficiency.

Honeywell was awarded a migration project to upgrade SEC’s control system to Experion PKS R430 and implement industrial cyber security. The scope included hardware/software refresh for 52 EPKS nodes, IT infrastructure upgrades (switches/routers/firewalls), 12 C200→C300 controller upgrades, Safety Manager R150, eServer/PHD/Matrikon OPC updates, new displays and a remote service node—delivered and commissioned within two months. Honeywell’s work eliminated the identified vulnerabilities, improved display call-up and process update rates, boosted controller capacity (controller loading improved by 35%), and delivered higher reliability, performance and safety following the successful Experion PKS R430 migration.
