Honeywell and UOP join to provide a better Operator Training Solution at Pertamina

Pertamina, Indonesia’s largest oil and gas producer and operator of the 120,000 bbl/day RU VI Balongan Refinery, faced an informal, mentor‑led operator training program that produced subjective qualifications and left competency vulnerable to retirements and talent loss. Honeywell, working with UOP, was engaged to provide a more sustainable Operator Training Simulator (OTS) solution using Honeywell’s UniSim Competency Suite to underpin a structured, objective operator certification program.

Honeywell delivered a customized UniSim‑based OTS with UOP‑derived process models, a Bahasa Indonesia curriculum, workbooks, assessments, two design cases and 44 training scenarios to mirror plant behavior and DCS interfaces. The Honeywell solution enabled objective operator certification (including DCS Board Operators), captured aging workforce knowledge, sped incident recognition and corrective action, reduced equipment/catalyst damage and maintenance needs, cut emissions, and helped secure lower insurance premiums—improvements Pertamina plans to replicate at other sites.
