Cool Results from a Smooth Migration Improving Performance of Ice Cream Production

Froneri’s Turenki ice cream factory in Finland faced an aging control system—Honeywell’s TotalPlant Alcont DCS was being phased out and legacy Mitsubishi PLCs had no support—leaving the plant with limited in‑house expertise, spare parts issues and cybersecurity gaps. To upgrade cost‑efficiently with minimal production disruption, Froneri engaged Honeywell to migrate the site to the Experion PKS PMD integrated automation system.

Honeywell implemented a migration using Experion PKS PMD, virtualization, new HMI hardware, updated controllers/IO (including Profinet) and a Honeywell cybersecurity solution, while reusing much existing infrastructure. The migration moved 3,000 TotalPlant Alcont I/O points in three days and ~1,000 PLC I/O points in a week, delivering faster commissioning, lower training and spare‑parts costs, reduced capital expenditure, and improved plant availability, reliability and production flexibility—backed by Honeywell’s ongoing 24/7 support.
