Borealis Chooses Safety Manager for Remote Cavern Installation

Borealis converted a large naphtha cavern to butane feed at its Stenungsund steam cracker and needed a cost‑effective safety solution for the remote installation. Because building a full Safety Manager node on FTE would have required expensive infrastructure, Borealis selected Honeywell’s Safety Manager with Remote Universal I/O to provide certified safety I/O in the cavern location.

Honeywell implemented Safety Manager with Remote Universal Safety I/O using fiber‑optic soft‑marshalling and SIL‑3 certified Universal I/O modules, integrated with the Experion PKS environment. The solution eliminated marshalling panels and field auxiliary rooms, reduced capital, engineering and maintenance costs, met IEC61508 compliance, and was “trouble free from day one”; Borealis signed a 10‑year contract, purchased eight additional Safety Managers, and Honeywell will replace older systems at Stenungsund.
