A Honeywell Case Study
Berwick Retirement Communities, which operates independent living, assisted living and licensed residential care in four British Columbia cities, faced aging mechanical systems at two facilities—failing gas-fired domestic hot water tanks at Berwick House and worn heat recovery units at Berwick on the Lake. Honeywell was engaged using its Energy and Facility Renewal Report to identify cost-effective upgrades and to pursue utility grant opportunities.
Honeywell rapidly sourced and installed high-efficiency condensing boilers at Berwick House to avoid service disruption, replaced aging air-conditioning units and electric duct heaters with heat pumps, and retrofitted underperforming heat recovery systems at Berwick on the Lake—work largely offset by BC Hydro Power Smart grants that reduced project payback to 3.4 years. As a result of Honeywell’s measures, Berwick Retirement Communities cut greenhouse gas emissions by about 25 tonnes of CO2, improved system reliability and reduced natural gas and electrical consumption.
