Case Study: Eindhoven University of Technology achieves world’s most sustainable educational building and ~80% CO2 reduction with Honeywell

A Honeywell Case Study

Preview of the Eindhoven University of Technology Case Study

Atlas Building is the most sustainable educational facility in the world following smart refurbishment with Honeywell

Eindhoven University of Technology needed to modernize its 1960s Atlas Building to meet contemporary safety standards, preserve the existing façade, improve indoor climate and acoustics, and hit campus energy goals (30% more efficient by 2020 and 50% energy‑neutral by 2030) without disrupting ongoing campus activity. The University engaged Honeywell for a long‑term partnership, drawing on Honeywell building automation and HVAC solutions, thermal energy storage, energy performance contracting and a cloud‑based Business Intelligence Model (BIM) to support monitoring and occupant services.

Honeywell delivered a smart refurbishment that included a glass curtain wall with automated triple‑glazed windows for natural ventilation and night flushing, integrated building automation and controls, energy performance contracts and a BIM app for comfort and room booking. The result: the Atlas Building earned a BREEAM score of 96.01% (Outstanding), CO2 emissions dropped by around 80% while occupancy doubled, and campus projects (including the Helix) achieved significant energy and cost savings (roughly 40% cost savings and ~42% CO2 reduction in 2017), with Honeywell continuing service contracts across the campus.
