A Honeywell Case Study
JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration (M) Ltd operates the Helang Integrated Platform offshore Sarawak, where effective fire and gas detection is critical for worker safety and regulatory compliance. The company found its static geographic mapping tools could not account for weather, wind or realistic gas dispersion, leaving operators unsure that detector placement was optimized; JX Nippon engaged Honeywell to re-evaluate detector layout using Honeywell’s 3-D CFD mapping and fire & gas detection analysis services.
Honeywell implemented a scenario‑based 3D dispersion model (CFD) to simulate weather, wind and leak characteristics and let engineers test detector moves rapidly; the analysis reduced the number of new fire detectors by one third, cut new gas detectors from 33 to 1, and lowered required repositioning from 35 to 11 fire detectors and from 66 to 1 gas detectors. Honeywell’s solution delivered measurable capex and opex savings, minimized disruption, and gave JX Nippon quantitative assurance that detection coverage meets standards and protects personnel.
