Robotic Palletizing System from Intelligrated Enables Track and Trace To Ensure Consistent Product Quality

Lorillard Tobacco Company, a long-established cigarette manufacturer operating a 1 million sq. ft. Greensboro plant with 36 packaging lines, needed a better way to meet strict quality and FDA requirements. Its legacy multiline palletizing setup consolidated cases from many lines onto single pallets, making it slow and labor-intensive to trace nonconforming product back to the source and requiring extensive conveyor maintenance.

Working with Intelligrated, Lorillard installed 18 robotic palletizing cells (each serving two lines) with barcode scanners that assign pallet IDs, custom end-effectors, and an adhesive stabilizing system; the phased rollout and staff training avoided major downtime. The new system enables case-level traceability, faster quarantining of defects, reduced man-hours and conveyor maintenance, and reliable throughput — delivering stronger quality control and operational savings.
