A Honeywell Intelligrated Case Study
Andlauer Transportation Services (ATS), founded in 1991, is a Canadian freight-forwarding company that moves roughly 3.7 million pounds of freight a day and serves niche markets like healthcare, pharmaceuticals and retail. As volumes and time-sensitive delivery commitments grew, ATS outgrew its manual sorting capacity—particularly in Montreal—and needed a cost-effective way to increase throughput and maintain on-time service without proportionally adding people, trucks or facilities.
ATS invested in Intelligrated automated cross-docking and a high-speed sliding shoe sorter (Montreal system installed for roughly USD 3.6M) to automate sorting and integrate controls with its IT systems. The new sorter processes up to 8,400 pieces per hour at 350 fpm (versus 2,500/hr manually), achieved 99.4% accuracy, virtually eliminated missed connections, and enabled a threefold increase in volume with 30% fewer personnel. The design was replicated in Vancouver and scaled up for Toronto as part of broader expansion plans.
