Suncor, operator of the Fort Hills oil sands mine, faced severe alarm overload after commissioning in 2018 with alarm annunciations up to 30 times recommended levels, creating operator overload and increased safety, environmental and production risks. To address this, Suncor partnered with Honeywell Forge and implemented the Honeywell Forge Alarm Management suite as the core toolset for its alarm improvement initiative.

Honeywell Forge supported an ISA-18.2-aligned program combining the Alarm Management software, multidisciplinary teams, and a focused rationalization process to identify and eliminate “bad actor” alarms. The effort reduced monthly alarms from about 270,000 to roughly 12,000, cut per-operator alarms per 10 minutes from ~30 to 6 within months, and achieved a sustained 95% reduction in alarm load, improving safety, compliance and uptime.
