How ShipReality Streams Multi-Billion-Point Clouds in AR

The customer, ShipReality, a company specializing in AR/VR ship design automation, faced the challenge of visualizing ultra-large point cloud models merged with CAD data on mobile AR devices like the HoloLens 2 without performance degradation. These massive datasets, required for engineering-grade ship retrofit designs, were too large for the limited computing power of the headsets to render locally.

The vendor, Hololight, provided its XR streaming technology, Hololight Stream, which was integrated into ShipReality's platform via an SDK. This solution streams the rendering from a remote server to the AR headset, allowing ShipReality to successfully visualize a model containing over one billion data points in fluid, interactive augmented reality. This eliminated software crashes and performance issues, enabling immersive design reviews directly on mobile devices and optimizing the retrofit design process.
