How BMW Group Speeds Up Prototyping with Augmented Reality

BMW Group faced a costly and time-consuming challenge in its prototyping process at the Munich pilot plant. The production of physical prototypes for vehicle concept evaluation was resource-intensive, requiring the same manufacturing processes as the final product and creating significant delays. To address this, BMW partnered with the vendor Hololight to implement its Hololight Space application and Hololight Stream XR streaming technology.

The solution from Hololight allowed BMW engineers to overlay and interact with true-to-scale, holographic 3D CAD models onto real car bodies using augmented reality. This digitized the validation process, enabling engineers to detect design errors early and check for assembly issues like accessibility without physical mockups. As a result, Hololight helped BMW save up to 12 months in its development cycle, drastically reducing the need for multiple physical iteration steps and streamlining the path from concept to production.
